Save Money at the Movies

I’m not the biggest fan of going to the movies, but my boyfriend is (he even works in the field and has a degree in cinema). So of course, we must go watch all the new “it” movies that have come out. One of the main reasons I have no interest is because I’m happy to watch it at home for free just as well (like a true frugal lady). But heck – it is nice to go out every once in a while, and thankfully he has taught me how to master getting discounts at the movies.

Here are my boyfriend’s tips on how to go to the cinema for cheaper:

Redeem credit card points & rewards
We have a credit card that allows us to get a 2×1 (2 for 1) deal for tickets if we purchase the tickets with the credit card. The boyfriend got this credit card intentionally, aware of the 2×1 ability and of his need to go to the movies so often. So if you too are a cinema addict, look for these sorts of deals & rewards – they are actually very common!

Take your own food & drinks
This may be considered “sneaky” but really – why shouldn’t you have the freedom to take your own snacks and yummies? (They’re even in the process of passing a law in Israel that allows it!) Take a purse or small bag that doesn’t arise suspicion and place some cans and/or snacks for yourself in there. Half the cost – same amount of fun!

Hit the movies at the right time and day
Head to the cinema on special 2×1 days or when the cost is cheaper. Many cinemas decrease the cost on days or hours when business is slow. Weekends are usually the most expensive, whereas weekday business hours and Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday offer an opportunity to save money and find great deals.

Pick 2D over 3D
3D movies have become a successful fad but they don’t offer a significantly different experience from the 2D version. Save yourself the additional fee and pick the 2D screening – my boyfriend even prefers it since he wears glasses.

Cruise to a drive-in
Oh I wish they had these here because they make for a very romantic date! Drive-in movies are often cheaper and usually screen more than one movie. Even the popcorn tends to be cheaper, and the experience takes you back to the 1950s.

Seriously, don’t buy the popcorn.
It’s no secret that popcorn and other yummy goodies at the movies are extremely expensive – you can easily spend more than your ticket costs. So why buy it? Not only is it expensive, it’s also extremely unhealthy. (Keep away from that butter!)
