Most of us started experimenting with budget brand makeup in our teens – from orange foundations and way too bright lipsticks, it’s safe to say that most of our beauty blunders occurred in our teen years. Then in our early to mid twenties some of us started experimenting with high end beauty products like the Cliniques and Clarins of the world. However the current economic climate has ensured that many of us cannot afford to fork out hundreds of dollars for beauty products anymore. But no need to fret ladies – it’s time to get creative! You’d be surprised to find how many of your favourite beauty products can be replicated at home.
Many people have begun to make their own bath and body products not only to save money, but also to do their bit for saving the environment. Research shows that homemade cosmetics have anti-ageing properties due to the absence of all the harmful preservatives commonly added to store bought products. Some of the most simple beauty products to make are moisturizers (that can be used for your hair, skin and nails.) My personal favourite is Cocoa Butter Moisturizer. All you need is cocoa butter, however if you’d like a more ‘potent’ scent, then coconut oil is the way to go. Then add a mixture of oils to create a paste like consistency (I love to add almond oil) and heat the whole mixture. Once it’s out of the microwave then leave out to cool overnight – that’s it! So simple! And I can personally vouch for this being the most effective and versatile moisturizer I’ve ever used. I use it every day on my face, body and hair and always get compliments about the scent! There are so many beauty products you can make at home – just search for whatever you need on the internet and follow the simple youtube tutorials!
Things like foundations etc can be more complicated to make (however not impossible!) If you’re pressed for time and don’t want to risk a beauty blunder, then of course it is okay to buy items like this. However be smart about where you’re buying from and try to find the cheapest prices – do your research online before venturing out to the shops. Drugstores are one stop shops for all the essentials – most offer a wide variety of cosmetics and bath products at discounted prices – look out for brands such as Marcelle and Annabelle as they are both budget friendly and heavenly! They offer high quality basics to fill up our make up bags from mascara to lipstick and are great for your everyday needs. Switch to brands like these that are high quality and budget friendly, as the results can be just as good as the expensive brands.
It may feel like there just isn’t enough money to justify taking care of ourselves like we used to – however that’s simply not the case. Maybe it cannot be justified to spend so much money on singular beauty products anymore, however there are certainly much cheaper options out there which are much more affordable. It’s important to take care of ourselves, because as the saying goes; when you look good, you feel good!
